Brittany Ferries gives green light to Cherbourg-Bayonne rail link

Brittany Ferries has given the go-ahead to a new rail-freight link between Cherbourg and Bayonne. The ferry company first announced the rail project back in February 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 health crisis hit, forcing a reduction in ferry services for nearly two years. But while the rail project—which Brittany Ferries deems strategic—was delayed, it was never cancelled.

Brittany Ferries and CMA CGM form a partnership in passenger and freight transport.

On the occasion of the Assises de l’économie de la mer event, the largest annual meeting of participants in France’s sea economy, Brittany Ferries, the largest ferry company operating under the French flag, and the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, announced that CMA CGM has agreed to make a €25 million investment in Brittany Ferries, including €10 million in quasi-equity. Through this agreement, CMA CGM is seeking to support Brittany Ferries’ post-Covid-19 recovery.

As travel restrictions persist, Brittany Ferries extends suspension of some services

“We had hoped for a return to service for all our routes in mid-March, but the reality is that most people are simply unable to travel at this time, " said CEO Christophe Mathieu. "Booking levels are extremely low and we are relying on loans to carry us through this difficult period. It is therefore simply not viable to run loss-making routes at this time.”

Freight keeps rolling on with Brittany Ferries
