Airlines should not punish customers by levying fuel surcharges or be given a get-out-of-jail card by government when cancelling flights. That was the message from Brittany Ferries CEO Christophe Mathieu, speaking to Paddy O’Connell on BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House today (Sunday 03 May 2026).

If follows today’s announcement by Secretary of State for Transport Heide Alexander that airport slot rules will be relaxed, meaning more flights can be withdrawn. On the plan, Mathieu said : “As far as the airlines are concerned it’s a win. I’m not sure it’s a win for consumers. Let’s see what it leads to in terms of flight cancellations in the weeks ahead.”

Brittany Ferries sails from three ports in the UK, Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth, to five destinations in northwest France and two in so-called green Spain.  “Don’t fret and fly this summer: sail-and-stay with us,” Mathieu added in a message to customers. “Beautiful destinations await, and we guarantee to get you there: there will be no shortage of marine fuels or price hikes – and that’s a promise.”
